overheating on a 1992 9000CDT auto traced to, surprise! the fan not coming on. The high speed fan comes on at about two needle widths before the red, runs for a bit, needle comes down about 1 or 2 widths, and it shuts off.
Low speed fan never comes on.
What I have replaced: the usual suspects, fuses and relay, and the sender too since I think it's original 300K miles ago. No change.
I can jump across 30-87 in the relay socket and make the fan run, and it will cool the engine down to about 8:30 on the the temp gauge, a good place to be.
Have taken the sender(s) I have four of them, and done the resistance in boiling water, it will close the low speed side of the switch which is the 194 degree side, I can't get it hot enough to do the high speed/temp side, but that runs in the car when it gets sufficiently hot so think that side and therefore the ground connection works.
Have checked the resistor on the fan motor pack just because and it shows continuity. Have TWO other complete Fan pack setups and everyone agrees on resistance from this to that. Again, I can jump across the relay for either fan speed and the fan runs high speed or low speed as expected. OH and if you do this... don't flinch at the arc you get on the High Speed side! and be sure to use something like 10 gauge wire too.
Am down to checking the wires (one for the low speed side) from the sender to the aux fuse box in the engine compartment (where the fuses and relays are) for continuity.
Have I missed something? Anyone have an "oh yes it was this..." story that fits the above?
I have all kinds of cool jumpers and will put pictures up on my site when I get my site transitioned too.
thanks for the sanity check.
