Sounds like what I've been through. One day the car seemed like it was running on 3 cylinders and the low coolant light came on. No puddle under car. Next day filled it up and the car started fine and ran fine to work. On the way home I got the same rough running and low coolant light. Pulled over and found bubbling from under the cap. Next start produced a lot of white smoke. Drove no further. Compression test showed it was time for an HG.

Head is at the shop. Looks like that will cost me about $200 all told - pressure/leak down test, removal of sheared bolt and stud, resurface, and installation of valve stem seals. Head gasket kit and new head bolts was about another $100. It's a pretty tough job due to difficult fasteners. Next time I'll pull the head with the exhaust manifold on it - that's got to be easier than going after those studs in the car. I think an indie will probably do this job for $800.

Another 9000 was also loosing coolant, though much more slowly, and tested low on compression on one cylinder. Plugs looked fine and there was no overheating. Poured in the Barr's Leaks for Head Gaskets, which does not require draining/flushing the system. Car starts rough when cold, but it's been running fine for a couple of months - only a few weeks as daily driver. Not sure if I'll do the HG on that one or just drive it into the ground. I'll decide when the other one is back on the road.
