an NTC sensor (Negative Temp Coefficient). The resistance should get higher as the sensed temp gets colder, lower when the temp goes up. You can use a hair dryer to make the temp go up and down while you have an ohm meter on it.
Not sure how many non-failing cycles are needed before the check engine light stops flashing. You may even need to disconnect the battery for a while.
