Offhand, I don't recall anyone having swapped to the later style engine management system. Perhaps one of the biggest obstacles is the fact that the CPS is of a different signal type, as well as completely unrelated physically. No way to substitute one for the other.
For a $400 car it'd be folly to attempt it.
First thing I'd try is a valve swap. A search on "TCS valve swap" should come up with a few of my old writeups.
