I know you did the cable ends but some here have reported issues with cables that have corroded internally over time. That will cause more resistance and less voltage. I had that happen on my '84 C900 that caused a non-start problem. You could do this first and see what happens, but don't just change parts--measure the resistance through the wire. Someone here will know the specs for that.
FWIW, I bought a re-man alternator from AutoZone for about $100. It came with a new VR on it. It's a longer and somewhat more difficult job to change than just doing the VR, but when you're done you don't have to worry about the charging system any more. Replace the hot (red) wire to the battery and starter, too if you're so inclined.
IMHO, the alternator at 150K doesn't owe you much. They can be quite long lived, but if you plan on keeping the car it makes sense to change it.
