I also play with Miatas and they are horribly notorious for HLA ticking. You can search Google for a famous solution: "2Twisty Flush"
Very common solution is to drain out 1 - 1.5Q of oil, then idle the car for a few minutes, then drain and replace filter. The reason is that the thicker (old) oil has a harder time effectively draining out of the lifters, but thinning the oil with the detergent-rich ATF helps it flow out much better.
I've done this on my Aero with no ill results.
Also, on cars of our vintage, it's not uncommon for the fuel injectors to have that pulsing "ticking" sound as well.
