I just laid the gasket on the head, the alignment dowels protruding out of the block held the gasket in place. Making some kind of guide sounds like a good idea though. I would highly recommend having a helper on hand for both the head removal and refitting. I broke the intake side chain guide when removing the head. The other I broke when trying to refit by myself. Its not that you need more muscle as you need more eyes and hands. I had my wife help me, her job was to thread the timing chain through and watch to make sure I didn't break another timing guide. Even with help it was a nail-biter.
My biggest lesson learned (besides patience) was to have a good low-effort way to suspend the head and lower in a controlled way down onto the block. If you can do that nice and slow it should be a lot less stressful. I lifted using a chain over some rafters in my car-port and a pulley. If I do it again I'll invest is a compound pulley as I was working to hard just to support the head.
As far as knowing its OK, you can see the gasket around some of the water channels and its such a close fit you would see it off if it came off the alignment dowels, also when you get the head down on the block you know it because is suddenly feels very solid, you have a heavy flat piece sitting on another heavy flat piece and its aligned with close fitting dowels.
Good luck, let us know if/how your alignment guide works, if you use it.
