I was shown the procedure by the person who trained all the Saab techs, for Saab itself. Hammering was involved.
You will not damage bearings doing this. Hammering forces are transmitted to the axle, not the bearing races, unless you've got the axle welded in place. Maybe (maybe) I could see an issue with later model years in which loctite was used on the splines, but even then, very doubtful.
The only issue I ever have with bearings is that, with enough age and miles, often the sealed bearing unit likes to fall apart when removing the axle. Other than that, never an issue.
Of course, if you're concerned, feel free to use a puller.
