Things to check that can cause this symptom:
The ignition switch
Old Battery Cables (positive and negative. Older cables can be internally corroded increasing the resistance in them, therefore causing a voltage drop.
A sticking starter solenoid - not closing when getting 12v
Old Yellow wire that runs from the ignition switch to the starter solenoid. Like the battery cables it can be internally corroded increasing the resistance in it, therefore causing a voltage drop preventing 12v from getting to the solenoid.
If your car is an automatic the neutral safety switch can cause this as well.
In my own 1992 9000 S, I experienced the same symptoms - happened more when it was warm out when the car was at temp. I changed the battery cables and bypasses the yellow wire by adding a relay to send 12v to the starter solenoid every time.
Since I did the relay modification to the starter circuit the car has not done this to me once! And that was over 2 years ago.
