Driver's side is easier. I swapped in a complete driver, bearing, flange assembly from an auto into my 89 5spd very quickly. I did it piece by piece on my 88 and 96. The shims on that side are important because they set the preload for the carrier. If everything is OK now, you can reuse them. I really can't remember exactly how I got bearings separated in every case but I have a variety of pullers and will use a BFH judiciously but try to take a "do no harm" approach. I never needed a big press.
Good luck. I think you';; figure out how to do this. My 88T is off the road now, but it's a great car and I'd love to get it up and running and to 300k like yours before the rust kills it.
