all you need is a hardware store and a couple of wrenches. And you must take off the serp belt to do the alternator.
My tensioner tool is a 1/2 inch wide, 5-inch long piece of flat steel with hole about every 1/2 inch. It's readily found with things corner reinforcement/repair plates and similar stuff in any hardware store.
A 1" to 1.25" long, 1/4" diameter hex head bolt and nut can be put through the holes "close enough" to the right dimension to hold the serp belt tensioner. The plate may bend a bit under load, but this works OK, if not the ideal tool. Use two of the metal plates and it will be less likely to bend.
You could also get a small turnbuckle and swap the round ends for angled threaded rods, also from the hardware store. You'll have to fiddle a bit to get the length right for holding the tensioner.
I like the flat bar version as it's cheap and easy to make. Just be careful to get the ends of the bolts securely into the notches on the tensioner. With two nuts on each bolt you might be able to set it up so the head of the bolt has some room beneath it and would fit over the tensioner notches and the head would keep it from slipping. Haven't tried that, but it might work.
