I've been driving a Saab 900 5-speed now for over 25 years. Recently, a growing arthritis problem in my clutch leg has made me realize that I might well need to move to a slushbox-equipped car in the near future.
I love the 900, but unfortunately the automatic transmission used in those cars is pretty bad; a 3-speed Borg-Warner unit of ancient design. (Even AMC gave up on these by 1972.) A new Saab is out of the question and I don't care for the GM-era models, so I'm considering looking for a 9000 when the time comes. How are the automatics on these cars? From what I understand they are 4-speed boxes, so don't have the "missing the top gear" syndrome that 900 automatics suffer from. How do they hold up? How do they affect gas mileage vs. the manual trans? Any particular years or models to avoid? (I assume a trans overhaul if needed is quite expensive.)
I've been reading through messages on this board to try to educate myself on the issues involved in moving to a 9000 and what to look for - in the 900 world we don't have to deal with DI cassettes, automatic climate control, traction control, or even ABS on the earlier models; they're simpler vehicles overall.
Thanks for any input on this...
