I have one in a 17 year old 9000 and it still shifts perfectly. My first Saab was a 9000, so I do not understand the virtues of the 900. It is a wonderful car; it drives down the road with a nice stable feel and even at high speed it is composed. I agree with the other folks that the gas mileage is not very good. I live in a semi-rural area and I get around 23 overall. The highway increases this somewhat. Good Luck, and take it from me (I love old Saabs) a 9-5 is a nice ride if you want to skip a generation. The sludge thing is a non-issue if you are mechanically inclined and drop the pan before purchase.
