9000 AerO,
Most of us have experienced the agony of serpentine belt failure.
Many of us have not had it happen in the convenience of our driveways.
Few of us carry a spare belt, breaker bar, and 19mm socket in our trunks.
NONE of us would refit a torn, partially shredded belt.
Several have suggested belt replacement after verifying the integrity of the pulleys. That course of action is reasonable if you are new to this type of vehicle, or are impacted by immediate budget constraints.
A select few Highly-respected contributors Quasimotors, Townsends, and Yaofeng all tout preventive maintenance regimens. (Do a SEARCH of their names.) Being a driven SAAB-ophile, my personal recommendations are:
- Serpentine replacement at 15,000 mile intervals.
- Idler pulley replacement at 30,000 mile intervals.
- Tensioner pulley replacement at 30,000 mile intervals.
- Tensioner shock replacement at 30,000 mile intervals.
- Repack the tensioner bracket bearings at 30,000 mile intervals.
- Verify the integrity of the alternator, steering pump, and compressor clutch pulleys at 15,000 mile intervals.
- Paint white lines across the face of the crank pulley from the center bolt to its outer edge. Subsequent misalignment of these stripes will predict damper failure prior to catastrophic damage.
"An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure." = B. Franklin
Happy SAABing!
