Came home today with a 1997 9000 CSE "Anniversary Edition," 2.3 liter automatic, that I found through a Saabnet classified ad. This is a high-mileage (about 285K) but very well-maintained car, and the price was right. All the service records came with it. Quite a few recent parts, including heater core and turbo. I found this to be a great way to find a used Saab, the previous owner has been a real gentleman.

I traveled some distance to pick this car up and bring it back home, and my overall impression is that this is an amazing vehicle. Very comfortable, it just eats up the miles and can be driven all day without stress or strain. Like my '86 900S that has nearly identical mileage it is still tight and gives little indication of its age or the miles it's been driven.

The drivetrain is in excellent shape, engine runs like a top and the automatic transmission shifts perfectly without a hint of slippage or problems. The engine came with a black DI cassette installed, which I know is technically not correct for the car. I was able to purchase a fairly recent (2006 date code) red unit online at a good price, and installed that. Will keep the black as an emergency spare.

This car has a bewildering array of "stuff" compared to my relatively bare-bones old 900. Nearly all the stuff on this car works, however, ACC, power seats, trip computer, power windows and mirrors, original stereo, power antenna, remote lock system, etc.; in fact the only feature that appears not to work is the driver's side seat heater. (I expected this, I think the seat heaters in my 900S only worked the first couple of years.) Passenger seat heater works. Depending on how much of a PITA this is to troubleshoot I may or may not attempt repair.

Body is in real nice shape, only a little rust on this car. A bit around the rear license plate area and edges of the rear hatch. A couple of places on the hood from stone chips. (Small amount of surface rust only, no perforation.) Small dents on the hood and a missing headlight wiper from someone backing into it. Since this car came from PA where there is no front tag used I'll need to get a front licence plate mount for NJ. (Junkyard item.) Needs gas struts for the hood, hatch struts are just "OK," hold the hatch up but just about.

The main issues needing immediate attention have to do with the brakes. Despite it being less than a year since all-new rotors and pads being installed, you can feel a distinct pulsing in the brakes when stopping. Additionally the ABS light is on. I'm told the ABS light came on just a few days ago, which is also the time the snow tires were swapped out for all-seasons, so I'm thinking there may be a connection there, possibly a sensor got contaminated or disconnected, have to get under there and check.

For the brake pulsing problem I'm inclined to just order new front rotors and pads from eeuroparts.com and install them. (At least it feels like the front brakes.) Although the car stops OK I don't like to mess around when it comes to core safety issues.

Other than that, I've been hearing intermittent squealing from the blower motor so that will need to be replaced. (Too bad they didn't get that along with the heater core! Looks like $60 part and an afternoon's work.) Pretty sure it's the blower since the squealing stops when you manually crank up the fan speed. I'm also hearing some noise from the little ACC sensor fan after shutting the car off. Looks like this just pulls out for replacement?

The most minor things wrong are a few lighting issues. Lights for the ACC button backlighting are out. The shift indicator on the dash looks like it has a bulb out on the right half. The right turn signal intermittently flashes rapidly, maybe some corrosion on bulb contacts outside. The latter should be easy, not sure how tough it is to get to the ACC and dash lights.

The only other hurdle is getting the car through NJ emission inspection. On OBD-II cars, they just check the computer for emission system faults rather than doing a tailpipe test. No indication of any problems (no "check engine" light on), so keeping my fingers crossed and hoping that it goes through OK.

Most bizarre design feature noticed so far: no glovebox so there can be a honking huge passenger side airbag!
