A bad thermostat made my '96 CS shoot needle up to H

Never really overheated, and NO trouble accelerating, car ran fine, but suddenly needle would go up to H about 5 minutes into a drive; park it and let fan run, with engine off, and it would cool off quickly. Let it run for a few minutes, tho, and then it was back up there.
I replaced the thermostat, after advice on here, and it was an instant cure.
Royal pain in the neck to do, due in part to annoying bolts on thermostat housing that hold a bracket holding up the heater return hose (pipe), and due to lots of smaller hoses in the way, and one (with metal pipe inside hose to PCV nipple) that needs handling with kid gloves - - I cracked the rubber on mine; and due to nasty corrosion all over the thermostat housing and inside the seat in the head where the thermostat and its split-ring gasket sit.
A 10 mm gearwrench would be a big help on the two M6 bolts for that bracket.
