Both ground and hot wires age and can get internally corroded, which definitely will cut the voltage you see on a meter or a gauge.
And FWIW, I got a reman alternator from AutoZone for about $110 over a year ago. No issues that I know of (car is on opposite coast with my daughter) but it's worth considering.
