It seems to be a fairly common problem that older 9000s oil pressure senders fail. If you're not seeing a warning light, it's hard to recognize when there's a problem, we'd all agree.
I am one of those, well aware of what a low oil prssure light means and cautious when one appears, who DID NOT NOTICE that the light never came on at ignition on. So one of the family 9000s fell victim to engine damage that I tried to fix and have ended up failing at and deciding to write off.
So, ALL 9000 owners, go now and verify that your pictogram includes a display of an oil can in the middle of the hood area when you turn the key on. That is the low oil pressure indicator. If it's not there at key on it will never come on when needed. The problem could be the wire but is probably the sender - - on these cars they fail sometimes. They are very reasonable to buy, awkward but not impossible to install by reaching down behind the block, or up from below if you're extra flexible.
The engines are very vulnerable to damage to the balance shaft chain and oil pump from low oil episodes. Mine also had a tick, that was a caught-on piston skirt on the flywheel-end cylinder - - they get sprayed with oil from a nozzle when there's oil pressure. Mere splash oiling isn't enough.
The balance shaft and oil pump problems, that I didn't anticipate and didn't want to dig into, are what ended up being the end. I should have listened to Eeuroparts and pulled the timing end cover off and fixed everything, instead just did the piston and rod bearings (not really needed). Immediately had lots of vibration, shortly started having low oil pressure at idle, then low oil pressure at higher speeds - - motor is junk.
So, dim33, you should proceed with care about how to fix your problem. I know of an apparently good 96 aero motor, 148K miles, here in the northeast corner of the nation that I was going to buy cheap to fix things, till other developments made the fix seem not worth it.
