A case for the plastic splash shields

See my post from this morning for my shredded serpentine belt story. Upon disassembling everything I found the idler pulley had a couple of big chips cracked off the outer edge, which I think precipitated the whole event.
My theory? Simply that the missing passenger-side section of the lower splash shield actually MIGHT be something to replace after it comes ripping off on a Vermont highway. At the time, a couple years ago, I shrugged and said "whaddya gonna do?" and ignored it ever since. If only because I hate fighting with those darn nuts and bolts that get frozen with rust. But without it there to protect you, there's the possibility for a piece of grit/small animal to fly up in there and whang something important like a pulley. However small the percentages may be, it's probably worth thinking about.
Double-bad on my part, because I have all three replacement sections of the splash guards and was just too lazy to deal with it.
I think I want to conjure up some way to attach that bugger that's easy to detach when it's inevitably required in the future. Anyone got any suggestions? Zip ties? Bubble gum?
