RH Inner Driver(long) Posted by DickT [Email] ![]() ![]() |
On the 98 CSE Auto I'm fixing up I was getting classic symptoms of bad rh inner driver--vibration under acceleration especially pronounced on left turns. The car has 141k. It came with a receipt that said the driver ($298) and tripod($148) had been replaced(labor $155) in 06 at 97k. I kept thinking a driver couldn't wear out that quickly and maybe something else was causing the vibration. I opened it up today and found the worst wear I've ever seen in my 5 9ks.
$155 labor seemed cheap for RH Inner Driver R&R, so I assumed the PO got hosed for the part but not for fictitious labor. Maybe I'm wrong though, and the mechanic worked fast and the cup really did wear develop severe indentations in 43k. The boot and grease looked good, though, with no sign of grit or water.
These things are a real pain. It's too bad they can't be reversed like on a 900. Has anyone found a source for these for less than $382 that isn't the small LPT size? I've got a used one that isn't so bad but it still caused some vibration in my 96. If it wasn't such a pain to swap I'd try it out. Years ago I used to build up shafts that had spun inner races of roller bearings. We'd run beads of weld and then turn them down just to gain .001". I don't think that would work in this case because the point load of the tripod spheres must be huge. Getting the heat treat right would be tricky so it couldn't be done with mild steel rod and a half round file. I don't know whether a slightly shorter or longer driveshaft that would move the contact points onto fresh metal on the cup would work or not.
