Sounds like the previous owner was charged for driver replacement, but simply received grease and a new boot. Look at the tripod... is it original as well? To get considerable wear on the inner driver, I would expect to go through two tripod bearings. I just repacked the the inner and outer cv joints on my passenger side shaft (96 CS), and saw very little wear on the driver surfaces at 82K miles. But that may be luck in getting in there early enough as the grease was definitely done.
The only thing I can think of is that someone installed an aftermarket shaft that was poorly dimensioned and chewed up the driver, then backed off and installed a used shaft from another car. Sorry to hear of your misfortune, the previous owner is probably in the dark on this one.
