Look to make sure cable is hooked to caliper arm

There's a barrel end on the cable, and it hooks into a lever arm off the caliper. This sometimes comes out. With the button pushed and the handle down up front, there should be enough slack to pry it back into place.
But what you describe could be more serious, like a broken cable. Very rare - - even in rust-land these stay free moving and unrusted into late years, they're a good design for an e-brake cable.
