Following is my experience with a radio that didn't seem to want to take the code, from a post I made here just after I cured it. This may be the cure to your code problem:
"I picked up a used Clarion radio from a '96 Aero to replace the one in my '96 CS that had only one volume setting, and had started cutting out entirely till banged back to life.
I took it to a dealer and got the code, but when I tried it in my car, after holding Band button to get "CODE IN," I'd key the code in and just get four dashes. I went back to the dealer to get them to double check and got same code.
I did much searching on here and everyone else in my boat seemed to have luck pressing Band button.
Months later, still no luck, after digging the radio out of the trunk where I had stuck it.
Then last night I did a search on here and read lots of posts, and it occurred to me: Maybe someone BEFORE me had keyed the wrong code in several times and put the radio into the "wait an hour with radio on and then try BAND button" phase. Also by then I had tried a few variations in case the dealer guy was dyslexic, so maybe it was locked out from that.
So, I did just that: Ignition to ACC, radio button punched to light up the display, band button held to get CODE IN, then went into the house for a little over an hour. Punched code in and I now have a working radio."
May you be so lucky.
