Removing it for cleaning is best, you can see how clean it is. Easier way to remove it is unclamp the hoses at the top of the IAC and the bottom of the throttle body, leaving the hose connected to the bottom of the valve until the valve is out.
Once the valve is out, the deposits on the valve spool can be seen through the ports. Use carb cleaner and some scrubbing to clean the spool to like new. Careful not to scratch or damage the spool.
