Car was a northern New England '89, dead in a field, had maybe 250,000 or 300,000 miles. Revived and put another several tens of thousands on it over 5 or 6 years.
The calipers themselves, plainly the originals, had massive surface rust, which for decency's sake I tapped off with a hammer and cleaned more off with a cutoff wheel, skating around, and a stiff welder's twisted-strand wire brush, in angle grinder. The caps over the adjuster screws were rusted down from their new size of 14 mm to so small a 12mm 6-point socket fit and removed them. Sealing surfaces and threads like new, retractor screws worked fine, calipers functioned fine, e-brake arms and cables were fine and moved freely.
Put new rotors on, new pads, and calipers were fine for rest of time till car was junked for serious fender lip rot.
Later on, one of the rear steel wheels had rust so bad on inside that it developed a leak thru the steel (slow seep).
I think many people shudder at appearance and replace calipers that don't need it. The key is, integrity of the boots, and no rust down along piston under the boot lip.
