The ABS ECU makes a bunch of checks including wheel speed sensor continuity on power up. Anything that is out of spec sets ABS light. I've had random ABS lights on power up and occasional ABS operation at low speeds. Twice I've disconnected the ABS control and checked the resistance of the sensors. Both times the left front sensor resistance was well over spec value of 1000 - 1100 Ohms. Each time the sensor resistance slowly returned to normal whether I messed with the sensor wire or not. The second time I soldered the sensor connector contacts to their wires thinking there could be a bad crimp. Not so, got an ABS light just the other day. All this is a rather curious phenomena, slowly decreasing resistance not affected by manipulating the sensor lead. Speed sensors were a reoccurring part of my working career. A common fault throughout was continuity issues with the very fine wires in the coils, the connection to the fine wires, and thermal expansion coefficient effects on the coil and coil potting. The slowly changing sensor resistance is indicative of a coil wire or connection being slowly pulled apart - fatigued by thermal expansion. Or the affects of corrosion on the sensor leads. It ends up being a matter how much you are willing to see the ABS light on, before you replace the sensor.
