I have the same problem with guages going dark. and you're right the edu does trigger the radiator fan. my indy re-wired the radiator fan with a temperature switch like you'd find in an old 900. It is inserted into a cut upper radiator hose and when the coolant running through reaches 80 something degrees the fan runs. You can also hard wire the radiator fan to the ignition switch but that will reduce the lifespan of your fan motor.
i'd like some detailed info of how to re-seat an edu unit as that is probably what i need to do and i've had the dash off - unable to find the source but didn't know where to look.
this problem caused me to overheat when my water pump was leaking. I actually over heated twice from the same problem ... and i have a slow leak in my original head gasket with 200k miles. I put in barrs leak.
cobbling along is right
