It is critical not to polish off piston tops - leave that carbon there! even though tempting to clean. If you take it off, the rings will fail shortly thereafter (did not happen to me but it is common knowledge).
I used a drill-mounted brush - just take your time there. Block all enigne ports - coolant and oil. Do an oil and filter change very soon after the jb. Don't forget, you can always do filter changes at any time and will only get a half-quart of oil at most in the filter and filter housing coming out since it is higher than the pan. Good time to replace oil-pressure sensor -$5 and hard to each later. I gave new valve seals to the shop to install. My turbo bit te dust a month after this job and may have been aggrivated by the debris in the system but with 218,000 miles, it was worn out anyway.
