I wouldn't worry much about ring failure, though in theory the cleaned-off carbon if it all went over to the sides and packed down into the rings could help lock them up. But well over 90 percent, probly close to all, of it would just wipe off or blow away. If you clean up, run each piston to TDC, then scour them with a scotchbrite Roloc disk on an air angle grinder. If you want to be extra careful of ANY carbon getting down the sides, seal each piston with a little wipe of grease around the outside edge before doing the cleaning, then afterwards, lower the piston and wipe the grease away.
But as dirty as the piston tops may seem, they really probably don't have much of a deposit on them. And if you left it there it wouldn't hurt anything. As a matter of fact, head back on, engine back in service, piston tops will soon get a new coat of carbon.
Always re-ring? Dref makes it sound like a maxim, and a simple thing. These motors don't need it, even at high miles, and it ain't easy to pull the motor to do. I had a 190,000 mile CS motor apart and the rings were remarkably free of carbon, still springy, and looked to have plenty of wear left in them. They went back in.
The rule for C900 and 9000 motors, endorsed by long recommendation on this site by many wise heads, seems to be, don't worry about the rings in the least at head gasket time, even on high mile motors.
