The sender does go bad on these cars quite frequently. I got one cheap at local auto parts store; you can get one from a site sponsor if you want a brand name part.
It's hard to reach, but lying atop motor face down (drape some cardboard or a piece of old carpet) with good light you can probably reach down behind intake and do it yourself. Vise grip opened wide, or a big socket - - someone posted socket size on here just last week, do a search. New one is often smaller than factory sender, need another socket for that.
My new one came with a captive aluminum washer, does the sealing when sender is tightened down.
To test it, run a jumper to the terminal that clips onto the sender and ground it. Then turn key on; if light is on, sender is bad. If still no light, then I guess it would be a bad bulb but since bulbs almost never get any use, other than quick on-off at startup, it's hard to see them going bad very often. Or could be an internal break in the wire to the sender, also unlikely.
