Good question. Here is a more complete explanation from my notes, which I probably copied from a Saabnet post:
A correctly functioning oil pressure switch is closed (has low impedance to chassis ground) with the engine turned off, or at oil pressure below about 6 psi. It is open (has high impedance to chassis ground) with engine running, and oil pressure above 6 psi. When the impedance is low, the oil can light is grounded and turns on. When the impedance is high, the oil can light turns off. Grounding the wire that connects to the oil pressure sensor should cause the oil can light to turn on. That's how you verify that the light is working when the sensor is not working.
In other words, there is current at the oil can light bulb when the ignition switch is on. The bulb turns on if it is grounded and turns off if it is not grounded. The light's ground location is the oil pressure sender. This is by design, and no fuse will blow.
