I don't think of this so much as spending $6,000 on a car that's only worth $3,000; I think of it as spending $6,000 to get a car that's worth $50,000 new. Really, the driving experience won't be that far off a brand new car, and the ownership experience, if it's generally well maintained, which I assume it is, won't be far off either. Sure, it's probably not going to be as reliable as a new Honda, but a new SAAB was probably not as reliable as a new Honda either.
I probably spend $2,000 a year maintaining my 9000. Some of it is required maintenance, some of it preventative, and some of it elective upgrading. If I sold it, the car is not worth very much, just about a down payment on a good used car. However, it is a very well-equipped '97 that I've had since 29,000 miles, that has all the upgrades I would ever want, and if I were to go with list price and add the upgrades to a new car, it would be a $60,000 outlay. I'm not going to say 'investment'! That outlay would lose $5,000 of it's value, the $4,000 in sales & excise taxes, and most of the $10,000 in upgrades the first week. That's $17,000. There would be still $45,000 left to lose, and lose it would. Even allowing for a couple of more expensive years, that $17,000 would probably get me through six years of 9000 ownership. The $50k car with $10k in upgrades and $4k in taxes would likely cost me $50,000 over six years and 75,000 miles. Just how I look at it...
