Anyone kludge in a 9-5 cupholder?

Just back from the junkyard, where I spied two 9-5s with the niftiest cupholder, tips vertically out of a slot in dash beside radio, then ring for cup swivels out to side.
It appears to be held to back side of dash with maybe, pop rivets? I reached in there with various small size torx, and a phillips tip, but could feel no attempt by any of them to grab the fastener. I could feel a depression in its center so I surmise they're pop rivets. I can head back with my right-angle extension on a power drill and maybe angle it enough to get in there and drill them out.
The big question, though, is, is there room on the 9000 between far side of ACC and radio for this thing to fit, if I carved out some kind of slot for it to come out through?
