I paid $160 to have my head cleaned, a 3 angle valve job done, valve stem seals installed, pressure checked, and checked for flatness by a local shop. It came back looking brand new.
Having just done the HG, I certainly hope I get more that 25,000 miles out of mine. I suspect the one I just replaced was the original, and that went 180k, though it's been weeping for the past couple of years from the area of the #10 head bolt. I tried the re-torque procedure, which slowed the dribble, but couldn't stop it.
Perhaps the shop that did the head last time re-used the head bolts? They are torque to yield, so they are good for one use only, and must be replaced (though others report mixed success when re-using them).
My wife blew the HG on the '97 900 SE Turbo a year ago - one of the pulleys disintegrated, and she just kept on driving. They had to shave the head twice to get it to the correct flatness. The total bill for her car including all parts and labour was $900 from an indy Saab specialist.
