When my Voltage Regulator went, the non-charging symptoms were intermittent - probably due to the brushes being worn out at about 180,000 miles. I put in a new VR and it has been OK for years.
Even though you bought a new alternator, note that replacing the voltage regulator requires only two attachment screws and the main positive wire vs. a fairly big job to replace the alternator. The hardest part is removing the two Philips-head screws that will be firmly attached - I used a Philips bit in a socket on a 1/4" drive socket handle so I could push the bit into the screw heads.
