Low, low, low, how low can you go? 6.1 volts here...

This morning, maybe 2 below zero Fahrenheit at dawn, my 9000 started and really didn't seem to be cranking that slow. Display showed 6.1 volts cranking voltage. Then quickly once started, charging voltage of 14.8, dropping thru the 14s and down to something reasonable.
I thought I'd revive this thread 'cause I had something to chime in about. I know I'm pushing this battery, but if it squeaks through this cold snap it may work fine through summer.
Some previous lows at cranking time this winter have been 6.7 and 6.9. Usually up in 8 or 9 range, higher on restarts during the day.
I'm currently unemployed and tho I use the car every day I don't usually need to be out of the house and somewhere at any set time. So a no-start would be inconvenient, but no tragedy. I have a good charger and it would probably start fine within a half hour.
My view of the dash display is it's Too Much Information about something you don't need to know and don't need to worry about. My best gauge is seat of the pants, how slow is it turning over, and also, how old is this battery?
I always keep terminals spotless and use felt anticorrosion washers, and if I buy a battery I buy the best. I clean up and re-shape the lead negative battery terminal clamps if a prior owner has overtightened them and stretched them, and I remove the steel bolts, clean all corrosion off on a wire wheel, and grease the threads on reinstall. I wire-brush clean or Roloc scotchbrite pad clean the positive terminal clamp, shines like a brass door knob.
But I don't sweat little details of charging and as you see I usually keep a battery till it dies dead. Join AAA if you want some peace of mind against leaving your lights on and killing a battery. Keep jumper cables in your trunk, and own a charger.
