Was this a Bosch universal O2 sensor, or some off brand? I too tried and failed with a cheap non-Bosch sensor on my Audi (worked for a couple of months), but have been very successful since then using the "Bosch Premium Oxygen Sensor with OE SmartLinkā¢", which you can get on an auction site for about $50. These are normal Bosch sensors attached to two feet of wire, and come with a special waterproof connector junction box which makes splicing pretty easy - if you are clever, you can wire up the rear sensors without the pain of removing the old wires, which are well hidden above the transmission on Audis.
What has also worked for me has been the use of genuine Bosch sensors with connectors for other more common cars spliced to the old plugs - these can be very inexpensive. On my A4 I used Bosch 3-wire sensors for a Ford Mustang 5.0 in front (about $35 each) and Bosch 4-wire sensors for a Chrysler (about $40 each). On my current A6 I have used the Bosch sensors with the junction box - the sensors appear to be physically identical to those that I removed, just no plug.
