Charge warning lamp not lighting up Posted by JerseySaab [Email] ![]() ![]() In Reply to: Re: Replacement alternator does not work, DickT ![]() |
Is the spec available for the commutator diameter?
Interestingly the charge light in the dash is not coming on, but the voltage display as well as a meter attached to the battery verify that only battery voltage is present. (This is a new symptom, the charge light was definitely coming on when the first alternator stopped working.)
I know the charge light is part of the circuit that energizes the alternator but according to the schematic there is a resistor across it to provide this function if the lamp burns out. (Same as on a Rambler.) So if it were just a burned-out bulb the alternator should still work. There is also a diode shown between the charge lamp and the alternator.
The schematic also shows the wire continuing from the instrument cluster to fuse 13 in the dashboard electrical distribution box "Behind Glove Box." Of course in air-bag equipped models there is no glove box, so I don't know if the distribution box is located behind the main fuse panel or behind the air bag, but that fuse would be something to check. (Anyone know for sure where it's actually located?)
From there the circuit continues to the ignition switch. So in theory there should be continuity, with some resistance, from the alternator connection all the way to the green and white wire on the ignition switch. Something else to check for...
