Replacing foam soundproofing inside HVAC tubes

Guys,
A large amount of the foam soundproofing in the vents in my car is gone (I pulled it out through the vents after it became unattached with age). With the A/C on full blast, it is quite loud. My ears almost hurt after an hour commute. I was thinking I could remove the ducts from the dash and cut the top from bottom, glue in some kind of foam (where to get?) and then glue/tape the top and bottom halves of the tubes together. Any reason this wouldn't work? Would any foam do or should I look for some kind of soundproofing foam?
Thanks,
Rob
