Sorry if this post is too late to do you any good.
Getting the catalytic monitor to reset was always a problem on my '96 and not worth fixing because the car will pass NC inspection with a catalytic monitor "not ready"
I've been getting a P0133 code in recent years, usually during the summer, and it usually reset itself. I finally got one that wouldn't go away and bought the same $48 Bosch sensor that you saw at Amazon.
Installed it on Sept. 10. After driving less than 2 miles the check engine light turned off at a stop sign. During the next trip to town (13~14 miles each way) the catalytic monitor "got ready" for the first time in over 2 years. That was with ordinary nonspirited driving, ACC system turned on – no special effort to make the monitor run.
So yes, a P0133 code plus a catalytic monitor refusing to run definitely points to a new front O2 sensor.
