Normally no sealer is used on the valve cover gasket, just a few dabs of RTV to hold in in place when assembling. So unless someone previously used sealer there should not be much cleanup needed. (It's basically a big rubber O-ring, not at all like the old-school cork-and-sealer gaskets that needed lots of scraping.)
I don't think you have anything to lose by trying to tighten the bolts. As the link in my previous post indicates it's a factory-recommended procedure for dealing with external head gasket leaks, particularly the common one you are experiencing at the front corner of the engine. (If the problem were internal head gasket leakage with oil and coolant mixing that would be a horse of a different color.)
