Also note that if your 1996 car was made late in the year, it might have the "stretchy" head bolts, which are a frequent cause of this exact problem. If so, I would replace the head bolts with a better version when doing this job, or if you want to get a winter out of it, just retorque them.
Your mechanic might be worried about breaking the head bolts when removing them, but it should be easy enough to see if they are loose.
Also note that someone nearby is selling a 1997 CSE manual with only 107K for $1700 - tempting to me with over 202K on my Aero.
