OK, thanks. I think that I'll take a look at the gas that comes out by the filter and the fuel rail before taking more extensive action. I'm assuming that the volume contained in the return line is very small compared to what's in the whole system, and will be significantly diluted.
Waiting for the battery to charge up - it had less than 5V on it when I started, so it's probably toast.
