I used the method that I proposed, i.e remove the fuel filter and jump the fuses from the flasher (always +12V) and the fuel pump. I put a short piece of cardboard tube between the fuel line that comes out of the pump and the deep pan below so that I wouldn't get fuel squirting all over the place, eventually collected six gallons of old gas, which had some visible white solid particles in it. Took the old fuel to my friend's gas station where he disposed of it for me, bought some new gas. While under the hood, I also found that the engine had mismatched spark plugs (1 NGK and 3 Bosch!), a cracked insulator for the DIC, bad vacuum hoses and fittings, a broken one-way valve, etc. Replaced all of those parts, swapped on a spare working DIC.
After adding about four gallons of fresh gasoline, I tried to start the car - no joy. Broke out a copy of "Avi's No-Start Checklist', ran/passed most of the tests (other than for the DIC, which worked on my other car) and the car still wouldn't start. Called it a night.
The next day, I was wondering what else that I would try, as there was clearly fuel getting up to the fuel rail the night before - the banjo fitting was seeping, so I tightened that. I pulled out the air filter to check for blockage, things appeared normal. Tried cranking the engine and it took a while but eventually started up! I let it run for a while, then drove the car around the neighborhood - whooo hoooo!
Now the work really begins - I made a list of parts that I need to buy it's already 19 items long, which does not include things that I already had on hand! The good news is that I've replaced most of these parts on my two previous 9000s.
