I think the 9000 is pretty similar. You could buy a kit with spring and seals for $5-10 back then, guessing the price is not too much higher now. You have to pull the master out of the car, pull it apart, flush out the inside, replace the seals and spring, then put it all back together. Seems to me that I used a bit of 600 grit emery cloth to 'hone' the inside surface, and put some kind of grease on the seals to help get it together. It took 1-2hrs depending on how easy it is to get in and out of the car, and how long it takes to flush the line. Split ring pliars are the only special tool I used.
Since it has been 15yrs since I have done this, I don't trust my memory. So check out the details of the procedure with a manual, or perhaps the Townsend site has the specifics.
All in all, if your master is easy to get out and you have the time, it is a project that can save you lots of $$. If the cylinder wall is scored, it will chew up the new seal in fairly short order, within a year or so. In that case, you will need to spend the bucks. Chances are good that you will be OK.
