It will be somewhere in between your '92 9000 and the 9-3. A 1997 Saab is the most reliable the 9000 got, which is pretty ok by current standards. Trouble-free? No. It's a Saab. Remember, a 1997 is a 4 year old car already. You will have to verify / replace all kinds of perishable parts if you want it as "reliable" as a new car.
I had a '95 9000 Aero, and had no trouble until the central muffler, water pump and some turbo pin all broke at 110,000 miles. $800 later the car once again ran, was quiet and fast as new. Then I sold it. Many say these things got a lot more "reliable" with the new electrical system, 2.3 liter motors, and new body style ('93-on). But you have to take care of them... that's the most important thing. As for chronic issues, there are a few, but none I encountered in the first 110,000 miles. Apparently the DI cassettes die sometimes. As always, if you buy an automatic, change the fluid often and expect major work soon after 100k.
Sorry to ramble. So, to spill it... I also had an extremely gremlin-prone '89 9000S, and the '95 Aero was nothing like that. Late 9000s should go a very long time between problems. If you are sure you want a 4 year-old car, go for it. Otherwise, might I suggest a '99 9-5 Wagon? They look nice...
