You could remove the rubber boot on the compressor side(aluminum housing side). Then check for thrust wear(in/out of shaft)and then spin shaft when all the way in(turbine side)and feel if wheel hits in exhaust side. Then pull shaft out and see if compressor wheel hits in the aluminum compressor side.Next rock shaft up and down and side to side to see how bad center bearing is worn, also turn shaft to see if either wheel hits at the limits of the play in all directions. This will give you a idea of how much wear has occured, and then you could go to a bone yard and compare their used units with your wear and pick the least worn unit, you could get lucky and find a good low wear unit.Donot remove compressor wheel from turbine shaft with out marking fully it's position with relation to a specific spot on the turbine wheel or balance will be off. But if you have heard it rub allready the balance is off and would have to be rebalance.Turbo City sells a video tape of each turbo type for less than $20.00 when you buy their rebuild kit that shows "how to do a rebuild proper" if not worn.
