I don't think this has anything to do with the battery, although one could always do a temporary battery swap and check that out. The symptoms point to your electronic regulator shutting down the field current at the offending RPM range. On the other hand, perhaps your instrument panel's voltage display is not telling the truth. That can easily be checked at say, the battery itself using a separate meter. Finally, as a long shot, the over 4k rpms could have the sympathetic vibes to loosen something and effectively remove the alternator from the system, which would not be a good thing.
You mention that you've had the car shut down at over 5k rpm. Even with the alternator not charging, this should not happen instantaneously, unless the battery has hardly any capacity left. But then, this should cause starting difficulty. One cause of your sudden shutdown could then be a shorting (or opening!) situation - either in the ignition or fuel circuits, even in the ignition switch itself. Of course, this is all speculative, and certainly doesn't cover everything. Good luck!
