Yet Another Automatic Gearbox problem.. :-(

All,
A little advise please.. I had my 9000CSE auto (1993 2.3i 80K) serviced by SAAB Dec 1999, all went well.
But just before Chrismas I noticed that on pull away the box was slipping. I decided to leave well alone and parked it up and used my other car until the Holiday Season was over. So I went to take it to the dealer yesterday and I now have reverse fine but no forward motion at all.
I checked the fluid levels and had to add a 1 litre to get anywhere near normal. The fluid that was in there had that expensive color of brown about it and I was worried :(
Ok the garage now tell me it is new tranny time and that the level was not the problem but the trans burnt up the fluid..
The question... Is this a likely story could the tranny burn a litre of auto fluid? Me thinks not.. But more importantly does having a low fluid level break transmissions and cause the problem I have.
Or is selection of reverse just fine (clunks it no slipping at all) suggest something else..
I am at a loss do I spend on a new tranny moan at the garage or just put the whole thing down to bad luck..
