Hopefully someone else can help you with which line is which, the Haynes manual doesn't really specify either. But I've heard the subject of over cool discussed before. Some cars may have a thermatic switch (like for the oil cooler) that only lets the fluid flow when hot. I have no idea if the 9k is like this, but I would suspect not. What many people do when they hook the auxilary cooler in line with the factory cool is to put the auxilary cool first in line. Meaning that the ATF goes through it first and then the factory cooler. This way cold fluid will travel through the auxilary cooler (where it won't get colder) and then travel through the factory cooler taking in ambient heat from the nearby warming up or hot radiator. It will work like this until the ATF gets warmer than the radiator at which point the auxilary cooler will add substancial cooling benefits. I believe this is the way most auxilary cooler manufacturers recommend installation, but I think it might be worth consulting the maker to be sure. Of course an ATF temp gauge would be an excelent addition to the experiment, especially if you got some before-and-after measurments.
I definetly think the addition is a good idea and I've long wondered if the premature ZF failure could be delayed by additional cooling. With good synthetic fluid changed regularly and more cooling and good driving habits the thing might last forever. Let us know how it all goes!
